How to Balance Life and Social Media

This generation has been possessed. No, not by some demonic clown or doll. But by a little device, we carry around everywhere. We can acknowledge that the phone has been truly revolutionary but was it really meant to be so addictive for some people, almost like a drug.

What I want to talk about today is what actions you can take to help you balance life and social media. The creation of it has had endless amounts of benefits. Companies have been able to expand their brands, people have been able to have their voices be heard, and in my case, and like a lot of people, even start a job within it. So moral of the story is that social media truly is great and I’m always grateful that I get to do something that I love so much through platforms like Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, etc. However, everything good always comes with a downside. And the downside here is the damage it can cause to our mental health. But how do we maintain that balance between real life and social media? Here are 3 important actions you can take to achieve it.

  • Avoid Comparison:

Let me ask you something. How often have you found yourself comparing your life with people on the internet, especially Instagram and Facebook? You compare your work, your life or even your appearance to another beautiful woman you see on that Instagram explore page. I know we are all guilty of this, myself included, and sometimes this action may be unconscious. I have gained experience through the years and I see all of the other girls that are in the same business as mine as role models and sources of inspiration instead of my competition. Sometimes the younger generations tend to relate more, beginning to doubt how they feel about themselves and lifestyle rather than learning to love the heck out of themselves and be grateful for what they have. The reality is that another person’s life or another woman’s beauty doesn’t mean the absence of your own. But think about teenagers who are still so vulnerable and are at the raw age where finding themselves is all they wish for. It’s truly upsetting to know that some young girls have tons of insecurities that they didn’t notice before they stalked that girl’s Instagram who seems like she has it all. As a mother of a teenager, I consider it super important to talk to your kids and make them aware that the things that they see on social media are not always the reality. Teach them to use technology to their benefit and not against them. If you have the chance, I recommend you to read my tips that include how to communicate better with your teenager.

Overall, for all you know someone out there could be comparing themselves to you. But we all breath the same air, we are all just human. We should all be hit with the reality that we have one life, why spend it wishing we could be or have what someone else has? You are you and that’s enough.

  • Don’t Lose Perspective:

Again, it’s important to be aware that not everything posted is real. What I wish I could always stress enough is that no one posts the ugly. No one’s, and I really mean no one’s, life is as happy as their Facebook timeline makes them seem. We all want to be somewhat idolized, which is why there are no benefits as to showing those days when the world comes crashing down.

Social media could turn into an addiction, making us lose perspective. It’s completely fine to take a break, a detox from it when you feel you are getting to that point where you lose the capacity to view things in their relative importance.

  • Limit Your Time And Avoid The Distraction:

Let me tell you that while we seat here, glued onto these rectangular screens, life is still passing us by. There’s nothing wrong with posting content and interacting with others through the media, but take some time to appreciate the present and the moment you are in. Because this very moment right here, you’ll never get it back. Sometimes we are hypnotized by our phone and social media that time flies and we don’t realize that we are putting important things to the side. Social media could be guilty of your distractions. Your distraction to finish things on time like: studying, working, reading a book and in some cases, interacting with our friends and loved ones.

We’ve all seen a group of friends or a family in a restaurant, all of them using their phones instead of appreciating each other’s company. As I mentioned, social media is a wonderful invention to humanity however if we abuse its usage, it can destroy human relationship and interaction.

You can easily track the time you spend on your phone and social media in your phone settings. That way, you will have a realistic idea, if it’s too much, try to cut that time in half.

how to balance life and social media

Dejame tus comentarios, me encantaria saber tu opinion.
