How To Avoid The Pre-Holiday Stress

I can’t believe that Christmas is just around the corner, so as we all step into a busy holiday season, we begin to try and juggle so many things at once: work, kids, husband, self-care, gifts to buy, events, decorations, etcetera. Girl, calm down! I hear you because I completely understand that feeling when you have so many things to deal with, and that “it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas” really means “it’s beginning to look a lot like stress” to you.

But relax! You should make the season more enjoyable. It’s all about organization, that’s the key! So you need to set some management strategies to set the holiday game on!  Try these 6 tips on how to avoid the pre-holiday stress, I always implement during this time of the year, because they could definitely help. Here we go:

1. Make a List:

Girl, I know you’re busy, we all are, the good news is that you still have some time to get ready for the festivities and all the things that come along with them. So what you need to do first is take a deep breath and keep calm, so then you can clear your mind and start focusing on what’s most important. Start “making a list” with all of the things you should accomplish. Write it in order of the importance level. I recommend doing it in Google docs because it’s pretty easy to use, you can also download it in your phone, so you can check your list of priorities wherever you are. Separate your list into categories, for example; gifts to buy, events to host or attend, holiday cards to send, and all of those significant errands you would probably have. Then, you can easily organize your time in advance and arrange your schedule to come up with more specific dates to get things accomplished. Check off the points immediately after finishing them. You will see how good it feels when realizing your progress as well as achieving satisfaction. Also, make sure you are working efficiently. Rather than sending personalized and hand-written holiday cards, maybe try to send a lovely electronic one. However, if you are really enjoying your procedures and the way you are managing your time, then don’t let anyone stop you!

2. Set a Budget:

For your shopping, I recommend you to set a budget in advance and have a clear idea on how much you would like to spend on each gift. That way, you won’t be surprised when your statement balance shows the amount you have to pay. Staple all of your weekly receipts together for your reference.

3. Plan your Shopping Strategy:

Unless you are an absolute pro at time management, most people always end up doing the famous last-minute shopping. To avoid the dramatic pressure this causes, try to separate 1 or 2 entire days, (or the number of days you need) at least 10 days or so before the holidays. That means that you are just in time to avoid the hundreds of people who will probably be at the mall getting their last-minute presents. And even worse, the long lines at the registers, no one likes those. Browse your local mall website to get an idea of all the stores it has and make a plan of the ones you would like to visit in order to find the presents you have in mind. This is the perfect way to save time and avoid walking and visiting all of the stores trying to find potential presents.

4. Ask For Help When Need It:

Sometimes the holiday season needs us to implement our multitasking abilities. This can make us feel overwhelmed when adding up to all of the chores we need to do. But again, you will reduce that if you plan everything in advance. I encourage you to take 5 minutes every morning or the night before, to plan your activities. If you have so many things to do in one day, it’s totally fine to ask for some help. I know you are a superwoman that can handle everything but dividing the tasks is always a good idea to reduce the stress. So ask your mother, husband, kids, friends, or even neighbors for some help. If you are hosting a Christmas lunch, dinner, etcetera, plan your dishes in advance and for the trustworthy people, there is nothing wrong in asking them to bring something in particular. And if you don’t know how to cook, make a stop to your local grocery store to order a turkey or ask for options for that special day. Take time to discuss how it would be prepared.

5. Saying No When You Need To:

Most of us assume too many tasks is normal because sometimes we simply don’t know how to say no when we need to. But think of it as taking on too much and eventually being overwhelmed and leading to stress. Usually, it’s good to say no, you don’t have to attend all of the events or say yes to more responsibilities when you have a big list to accomplish first.

6. Pay Attention To Your Resting Habits:

It doesn’t matter how busy your day or life is, you need to take advantage of your resting and relaxing moments. Always remember that self-care and mental health is the most important thing. If necessary, schedule your breaks, like 2o minutes of a meditation session or a yoga class, spa session, reading, etcetera. Use that time to let your mind flow free and just focus on you. The thoughts regarding your errands are not allowed during this time. Focus on the positive no matter how tough or difficult the day seems. Let out all of the negative thoughts. Just inhale the good and exhale the bullshit, take a deep breath and keep moving forward!

The holidays should be a time to celebrate with your loved ones. You will see that if you organize yourself a little bit, that will make a big change and you won’t feel stressed. So try to enjoy and make the most of that moment instead!
